Search Engine Ranking Tips

Please read this list of answers to common questions about Australian Only Web Directory. If you cannot find your answer here, please contact us with your questions.
  1. Include Meta Tags
  2. Ensure Relevant Titles For Each Page
  3. Website Content
  4. Search Engine Friendly URL's Where Possible
  5. Link Submission

1. Include Meta Tags. Keyword and Description Meta Tags within web page's code gives vital information to Google. It aids the search engine by telling it exactly what the page is about before it scans through your entire page. For example if you were to look through the code in our About Us page you will find the following:

<meta name="description" content="Find products and services in Australia...">
<meta name="keywords" content="australian directory, australian only directory, australian...">

Although I have cut the code short in the example above, you get the idea. The keywords included in your Meta Keywords should be relevant to your webpage only - not website, webpage.

For arguements sake if your website consisted of only two pages and sold designer shoes and handbags, you would only enter keywords such as "Prada shoes, designer shoes, designer shoes..." for the Shoe page of your website, and not keywords such as "Prada handbags, designer handbags..." etc.

It is also a good idea to keep the keywords at around 100 characters and description meta tag at 200 characters so don't go overboard, again list only what is relevant.
2. Ensure Relevant Titles For Each Page. Web page titles are read by search engines when they crawl through your site. It's one of (if not) the first items it looks at and is used on the results page when Google displays your site - so it's important to Google as it is relevant to users who see your website.

So what are Title Tags?

Within the website code it looks like this:

<title>Add a Link to Australian Only Website Directory<title>

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On a browser it is displayed here:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And this is how Google displays it:

Remember: Even if your website is the #1 result for a particular search, users won't click on it if it's not relevant to their search.
3. Website Content. So now that you've selected a few key words and or key phrases that are relevant to your web page, it's now time to incorporate those words and phrases into your content.

As far as websites go, content is king. The better content you have, the more users will frequent your website (and link to your website on different blogs, forums etc - thus creating more links to your website and more and more traffic for your website).

For each page that you have content on, remember to include a H1 tag. A H1 tag is simply a 'heading tag' to let Google know what the page is about in one line. Again I will use the 'Add a Link' page as an example to show you what it looks like within the source code:

<h1>Add a Link<h1>
4. Search Engine Friendly URL's. As well as all the suggestions I have listed above to help you optimise your website, it is also worthwhile optimising your website links.

Having pages on your website named page1.html and page2.html isn't helpful to Google or the end user.

Again applying the keywords you have chosen, if your website was about Prada shoes (in my first example), page1.html could be named pradashoes.html and page2.html as pradabags.html.
5. Link submissions. Having an optimised website is great but what's the point if Google doesn't know about it?

This is where Index Australia will provide your website with a helping hand. By listing your website on Index Australia, it provides search engines like Google with a direct path to your website - in other words, Google will find your website through us.

So how does Index Australia help my website if it's already listed and known by Google?

The simple answer is that it always helps - the more links you have coming into your website is an indication as to how popular the website is as seen by search engines, and thus giving your website more credibility in the markets you target.
